  • How to create our favourite Portobello Road Gin cocktails at home

Our corner of London is famed for eclectic style, pastel-coloured streets, and that house with the blue door. But it’s also become pretty well-known for a particular gin. So if the sun is shining and you’re in search of a refreshing drink to enjoy in the garden or you’re simply looking to enjoy a tipple or two on the sofa in place of a night on the town, here are some of our favourite cocktail recipes from our friends at Portobello Road Gin along with a few tips on how to create them yourself at home.

    The Ultimate Cooling Copa

The secret to this drink is keeping everything chilled. So keep your glasses and gin in the freezer, store your cucumber, melon, and apple in the fridge, and put the tonic on ice.

    • 50ml Portobello Road Gin
    • 200ml tonic water
    • Cucumber, watermelon, green apple, and mint leaves to garnish
    1. Fill the glass with ice and slowly pour over your gin and tonic
    2. Use a vegetable peeler to slice ribbons of cucumber, chop the watermelon into cubes, and add to the glass along with a few mint leaves
    3. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can create an apple fan which will act as a parasol and keep your drink extra cool in the sunshine

    - Slice off one slide of the apple and lie skin side up on your chopping board
    - Slice off the two outer edges and discard
    - Cut the remaining apple into uniform slices around 3mm thick
    - Once you’ve finished, fan out the slices so they’re still connected at one edge and place on top of your drink

    Tom Collins
Enjoy as a refreshing tipple for one or scale up the quantities and serve in jugs at BBQs and garden parties.

    • 25ml Portobello Road Gin
    • 17.5ml lemon juice
    • 25ml sugar syrup (you can make this yourself by dissolving 300g of caster sugar in 150ml of water before cooling and storing in the fridge until chilled)
    • 100ml soda water
    • Slices of fresh lemon to garnish
    1. Fill a tall glass with ice
    2. Add the gin, lemon juice, syrup and tonic and mix slowly with a long handled bar spoon
    3. Pop in a couple of slices of lemon to garnish

    The Blighty Mojito
Created by Portobello Road Gin’s Jake Burger, this British take on a mojito substitutes gin and tonic for the rum and soda and adds a little cucumber into the mix.

    • 50ml Portobello Road Gin
    • 20ml lime juice
    • 20ml sugar syrup
    • 100ml tonic water
    • 10-15 mint leaves
    • 1 inch of diced cucumber
    1. Add a handful of crushed ice to a tall glass
    2. Add the gin, sugar syrup, lime juice, cucumber, mint, and ¾ of the tonic water and stir everything together with a long handled bar spoon
    3. Top with more crushed ice and the remaining tonic
    4. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint

    Red Snapper
Portobello Road Gin’s take on a Bloody Mary is perfectly summarised in the words of Charles Embury - “a classic example of combining in one potion both the poison and the antidote.”

    • 50ml Portobello Road Gin
    • Dash of orange juice
    • Dash of lemon juice
    • Pinches of salt and pepper
    • Tabasco sauce (you choose how much!)
    • Dash of Balsamic vinegar
    • 200ml tomato juice
    1. Add 3 or 4 cubes of ice to a large glass
    2. Pour in all of the ingredients and mix together. Portobello Road Gin’s Director, Jake Burger, recommends pouring into an identical glass, then pouring back into the original one
    3. And if you’re feeling fancy, garnish with a sprig of rosemary to finish

And there you have it - a selection of favourite Portobello Road Gin cocktails that can be whipped up at home in a flash. Be sure to share your creations with us by tagging @portobelloldn on Instagram.
